Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa is an Indian chess grandmaster who made it to the finals of the Fide Chess World Cup 2023, becoming the world’s youngest chess master. He completed his early education at Velammal Matriculation School Mogappair (Main), Chennai. He is just 18 years old and has reached the final of the Chess World Cup 2023. When Praggnanandhaa was just 4 years old, he started playing chess. He started playing chess to get rid of his sister’s TV addiction.

His sister R Vaishali is also a chess grandmaster. Both brother and sister started playing chess together from the very beginning. He won the Under 7 title at the national level for the first time. After that, Praggnanandhaa participated in the World Youth Chess Championship for the first time, in which he performed brilliantly and won the title. After winning the title, he received the title of FIDE Master.

Praggnanandhaa won the Under 10 title in 2013. In 2016 he became the youngest International Master in history at the age of 10 years, 10 months, and 19 days. In 2017 he achieved his first grandmaster norm in the World Junior Chess Championship. He stood fourth with 8 points. He became India’s youngest Grandmaster at the age of 12.

18-year-old Praggnanandhaa became the youngest player in the world to reach the final of the FIDE Chess World Cup in 2023. Praggnanandhaa defeated Fabiano Caruana in the tiebreak in the final of the Chess World Cup 2023. With this, he became the second Indian after Vishwanathan Anand to reach the final of the Chess World Cup. In the Chess World Cup 2023 final, he lost in a tiebreaker to 5-time world champion Magnus Carlsen.

Carlsen won over Praggnanandhaa in 45 moves despite playing with black in the first game of the rapid format. Both players agreed to a draw in the second game, leaving Carlsen the winner by 1.5-0.5 (total 2.5-1.5). Praggnananda definitely lost, but he not only became the youngest person to reach the World Cup final but also made chess lovers his fans with his game.

Earlier in 2022, Praggnanandhaa defeated chess number 1 player Magnus Carlsen in the online Champions Chess Tour 2022. He finished second in the Chess World Cup 2023 final after losing to Carlsen, thereby securing his place in the 2024 Candidates Tournament to be held in Toronto, Canada in 2024.
