KL Rahul is an Indian cricket team’s star opener batsman and his full name is Kananur Lokesh Rahul. He has also represented teams like Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants in IPL. He was born on 18 April 1992 in Kannur located in Ramanagar district Magadi taluk Kudur Hobli, Karnataka. He did his early education at NITK English Medium School which is located in Mangalore. He completed his pre-graduation from St. Aloysius College, Mangalore.
He later shifted to Bangalore for his higher studies where he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Jain University. Due to the cricket worm in him since childhood, he started taking cricket training at the age of just 10 years and after 2 years played cricket matches for Bangalore United Cricket Club. During his graduation, Rahul focused on his cricket career along with his studies.
He soon made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2010-11 season and represented India in the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in the same year. After that, Rahul also attracted the attention of the IPL franchise with his performance, and in 2013, IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore bought it for ₹1 crore and included it in his team. In the 2013-14 domestic season, he scored 1033 first-class runs, which was the second-highest total in a season in the history of domestic cricket.
Playing for South Zone in the final of the Duleep Trophy in 2014-15, Rahul scored 185 runs in 233 balls in the first innings against Central Zone and in the second innings he scored 130 runs off 152 balls. His innings played in the final of the Duleep Trophy proved to be the turning point for his career. Impressed by his innings, the Indian team selectors selected him for the Indian Test squad for the Australia tour. He made his Test debut against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Rahul could not make his debut Test memorable and was dismissed after scoring only 3 runs in the first innings while batting at number 6 and batting at number 3 in the second innings. However, KL Rahul scored his maiden Test century in his second Test in Sydney, opening the innings with Murali Vijay, scoring 110. On his return to India after the Test series, he scored 337 runs against Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket and became the first batsman from Karnataka to score a triple century.
In 2016 he was included in the national team for the Zimbabwe tour where he made his One Day International debut against Zimbabwe at Harare Sports Club. In his debut ODI match itself, he scored a century while playing an inning of 100 runs. Thus he became the first Indian cricketer to score a century in an ODI debut. After the ODI series, he made his T20 International debut against Zimbabwe itself. He is one of the batsmen of the Indian team who has scored centuries in all three formats of cricket.
KL Rahul holds the world record for being the only player to score a century in the first innings as an opener in both Test and ODI formats. Apart from this, he is the first batsman from India to be dismissed for a hit wicket in T20 International cricket. He has performed brilliantly in all three formats of cricket but his performance has always been lacking in consistency, due to which he has had to be dropped from the Indian team several times. After Virat Kohli relinquished the captaincy from all three formats, Rohit Sharma was given the captaincy of T20, ODI, and Test teams, and Rahul was also declared the vice-captain of all three formats.
