Grahan Web Series Plot/Story:
Disney Plus Hotstar’s web series Grahan is a sensitive and thought-provoking tale of such a distorted nature of society and politics, centered around an IPS daughter, the father of the riots, dark politics, and a horrifying secret. The story, timeline, and characters of the Grahan may be set in a decades-old era, but the scenes seem as if they were a thing of the past.
By the way, the story of the Grahan is inspired by Satya Vyas’s novel Chaurasi. The novel was written against the backdrop of the events following Operation Blue Star in Punjab and the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The story of the Grahan mainly runs in two time blocks spaced three decades apart. Starting from 2016, it covers the events of 1984 and a year or two ahead of it. Amrita Singh is the City SP in Ranchi as of 2016. Honest and dedicated to his work. Sikh father lives with Gursevak.
The father wants Amrita to get married and move to Canada, where the boyfriend lives, but Amrita is postponing. Amrita wants to use the power she got from the Constitution to change society, but the seniors advise her to be ‘practical’.
Tired of political interference during the investigation into the murder of a local journalist, she makes up her mind to quit the job but stops when the DIG convinces her. Elections have begun in Jharkhand. Chief Minister Leader of Opposition is insecure about Sanjay Singh’s growing political clout and to rein in him, orders the Police Department to resume the investigation of the 1984 riots against Sikhs in Bokaro. Sanjay Singh is believed to be behind these riots, but no evidence or witnesses could be found against him in any investigation.
SIT is formed. Amrita Singh is made in charge. Amrita is joined by Deputy SP Vikas Mandal, who has a unique record of carrying out every investigation to her name. The SIT starts its work. However, the ground slips under Amrita’s feet when initial investigations reveal that her father is Rishi Ranjan, the main culprit of the riots.
Amrita wants to know the truth from her father, but Gursevak refuses to say anything to hide a secret. Gursevak has kept this secret in his chest for years and is ready to make any sacrifice to bury it in his chest. The links to this secret are in Bokaro.
When he comes to know that Amrita is about to go to Bokaro for SIT investigation, he also tries his best to stop her. Starting to consider her life as a bundle of lies, Amrita needs answers to her questions and also the truth.
Amrita decides to go to Bokaro, where many surprising revelations await her. The story of the Grahan itself contains many emotions – the pain of riots, the betrayal of a friend, innocent love, the political business of hatred, and the remorse of the riots.
However, mainly it is a poignant depiction of the emotional relationship between a father and daughter. The series also highlights many more important issues, which are still relevant today. The writing team of the series has put these issues into text through visuals.
The eight-episode web series centers around the pain of Chaurasi’s riots and its SIT investigation, but the love story of Rishi Ranjan and Manu is the gentle and endearing part of the series.
Set in an era when the younger generation Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Sheshadri’s film used to fall in love while swinging on the lines of the hero. The love story of Rishi and Manu is intensely composed by Amit Trivedi’s music.
